SUCCESS STORY: POLYCARP. P. MUSHI A FARMER SUPPORTED BY FASO AND VECO

“It is hard to believe today I am remarkable Polykarp with high respect from my surrounding community. Three meals are no longer a problem I can feed my four children, mother and grandmother. I feel proud passion fruits enables to implement my responsibilities as a head of the family” Said Polycarp a passion fruits farmer.

Mr. Polycarp is 39 years old farmer residing at Kibosho village. He is married to one wife with four children. Has inherited 4 acreage of land from his grand father and used to cultivate vegetative crops like cucumber, green grizzles, egg plants and tomatoes which had very low prices in the local markets. 

“Due to low income in vegetative crops, I explored an alternatives works in which most of them risked my life, I do remember in 2005, I was artesian miner in Tanzanite in Merarani, Arusha.  I stayed for more than 5 years working in heavy duties but I earned very little, terrible enough, a lot of my friends died in trenches. The causalities worried my family too much considering that with the work I failed to support them financially”, Said Polycarp.

In 2013, FASO through VECO mobilized the group and established passion fruits nurseries whereby seedlings distributed and best agricultural trainings on pest and diseases control, spraying calendar, fertilization and data recordings were provided to members

“ From 20I3 to 2015 I have transplanted the total of 710 seedlings of purple passion whereby VECO Tanzania helps to increase productivity and create new market opportunities for the produced fruits”

“I sold more than 10,453 kilograms of passion fruits in the local and export markets for an average price of 2500 per kilogram and earned more the total 26,132,500, also, I made 9,600,000 from sales of seedlings. The revenue facilitated my wedding ceremony and sending my daughter to technical college. People who once did not believe this would work are asking me to help them.  “  Said Polycarp.

“The main challenges are including inadequate agronomic techniques, shortage of skilled labour, lack of infrastructure that complies with the market standards, high cost and counterfeit inputs which make difficult to control high incidence of diseases and pests. Quality is further compromised by inadequate infrastructure such as grading sheds and cold rooms at farm level, poor and insufficient irrigation infrastructure but we thank VECO now is addressing some of the major challenges”. Said Polycarp.

“In the three years I have been in farming, I have realized that it is a rewarding business. Sometimes, I look back and wonder where I would be if I VECO and FASO had not supported us. I am happy.” Concluded Mr. Polycarp

SUCCESS STORY-KAHE HORTICULTURAL COOPERATIVE SOCIETY-MOSHI DISTRICT

Kahe Horticultural Cooperative Society showing how small hold farmers can transform lives and move people out of poverty through market-oriented agriculture. The 138- KAHOCOSO members began working with FASO Tanzania in January 2014 to improve their business skills and diversify into a modern markets opportunity, they were linked and signed impressive contract with Frigoken Export Company to produce French beans and about sixteen acreage were grown. Frigoken provides the farmers

with seeds and guarantees to buy their harvest at an agreed price.

As the first harvest begin in October 2014, with the price of 750 shillings per kilogram, the farmers recognize that French beans bring spanking prosperity to their community. About 14,456 kilograms of French beans were collected and sold within the three months of October, November and December. "We have never grown French beans neither accessing export markets before FASO intervention, we were very worried but now we see the bright future for success." said Nelson Mmanyi

“We can see that it will be a prospective source of revenue for us,” said farmer Dina Saidi, a 50-year-old mother of five children. “It will help me pay school fees, acquire clothes and complete to build my small house. It is something that will raise our living standards.”

Quality is further compromised by inadequate infrastructure such as grading sheds and cold rooms at farm level, poor and insufficient irrigation infrastructure but we thank FASO now addressing some of the challenges. Through Inclusive Modern Market (IMM) in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Project (FFV), hundreds of farmers have the potential to capitalize on a similar opportunity, aim to double the fresh fruits and vegetables incomes to more than 500 farmers in  Moshi District. Since launching in January 2014, the program has laid the keystone for a thriving sustainable industry that can help farming families lift themselves out of poverty.

FASO Tanzania, helps farmers to increase their productivity and create new market opportunities for their French beans . This work begins with forming or strengthening Commercial Farmers Organizations (CFOs), which allow many of farmers to sell vegetables collectively and improve their bargaining power. “There was never a market for our vegetables, so we would just eat few vegetables  and the rest were left to rot" Said Erasto Mlay, Chairman of the KAHOCOSO.

Through the Commercial Farmers Organizations (CFOs), FASO Tanzania facilitates training sessions for farmers on key skills. Many of these trainings take place on demo plots, where farmers receive hands-on experience in preparing the land, controlling pests and diseases, managing the soil and harvesting of vegetables. Collaborating with other actors,  also provide business training for the farmer business groups so that they can interact with buyers as equals and create more income for their members.

 “Many farmers just didn’t believe it was possible to all of a sudden sell their French beans in the export company,” Said Catherine Macha “It wasn’t believed until they actually saw, with their own eyes, the company coming here to collect  our French beans, it is  when started believing. Now, farmers thinking to expand their plots" Said Elinami Mtei.

FASO is linking farmers with financial institutions to offer better access to credit and facilitate Village Commercial Bank (VICOBA) in CFOs. The fund can help smallholders to invest in their farms and take advantage of a market opportunity for their vegetables. Also, link them with the certified input dealers to avoid counterfeit inputs and enable collective purchase.

This remarkable success story is proof that smallholder farmers can be part of the solution to global food security, helping to feed the world. But they cannot do it alone. What they need is that rich and poor countries alike invest in and support agricultural and rural development, creating the conditions to move poor rural people out of subsistence farming and into the modern market places.

In my many years of working in agriculture and rural development, two things have become increasingly evident. The first is that farming at any scale is a business, and smallholders and producers must be treated as entrepreneurs. The second is that businesses need clear linkages along the value chain, from production to processing, marketing and, ultimately, to consumption. When these links are in place, wonderful things begin to happen to farmers.

WAKULIMA KAHE WANUFAIKA NA MRADI WA MAHARAGE MACHANGA (FRENCH BEANS)

Shirika la FASO likishirikiana na mashirika mengine yani VECO TANZANIA na kampuni ya Frigoken yenye makao makuu yake nchini kenya, wamewawezesha wakulima wa kata ya Kahe kwa mara ya kwanza kulima maharage machanga.

Chini ya utaratibu wa kuwakopesha wakulima mbegu na vifaa vingine (k.m pembejeo) wakulima wa Kahe waliweza kuingia mkataba na kampuni ya Frigoken chini ya usimamizi wa shirika la FASO na VECO.

Wakulima hao wengi wao wakiwa vijana wameweza kunufaika kulima maharage machanga na kuiuzia kampuni ya Frigoken kulingana na mkataba waliojiwekea. ''Hii ni hatua nyingine ya maendeleo kwa mkulima mdogo kupata fursa ya kukupesheka pembejeo na kupatiwa soko, alisema Ndugu Elasto Mlayi, mkulima kiongozi wa kahe''.

Shirika la FASO chini ya ufadhiri wa shirika la ILO kupitia The Foundation for Civil Society wametoa mafunzo ya usindikaji kwa wakulima katika kata ya KAHE. Huu ni mwendelezo wa mradi wa kuelimisha wakulima vijana juu ya kilimo cha mbogamboga, na usindikaji. Katika mafunzo hayo wakulima wapatao therasini walipatiwa mafunzo hayo kwa lengo la kuanza usindikaji lasmi kupitia chama chao cha KAHOCOSO. Mafunzo hayo yaliwezeshwa na Afisa Kilimo Moshi vijijini, (Horticulture) Bi. Mercy Urio na Bi. Modesta Mosha kutoka shirika la SIDO.

Ufungashaji (Packaging)
Mwezeshaji vilevile alisisitiza kuwa katika uuzaji vyakula katika soko, ufungaji una umuhimu mkubwa katika maeneo ya mijini, kwenye ushindani mkubwa wa kuuza bidhaa, ufungashaji mzuri unatakiwa. Vyombo vinavyotumiwa kufungasha lazima view na maombo mazuri na ujazo ambao soko linataka.

Pia lebo ziwe zenye rangi na mpangilio wa kuvutia, pamoja na vielelezo vya kutosha kukidhi sheria za udhibit wa vyakula, Kama vile bei, anwani ya msindikaji, vilivyomo na tarehe za kutengeneza/kutumia bila kuharibika.

Mahita ya kufungasha vizuri yanaweza kuwa kazi kubwa kwa wazalishaji wadogo, maana gharama zake ni kubwa. Hata hivyo, kufungasha kukidhi matakwa ya walaji na sheria ya nchi ni muhimu. Vifungashio viko aina nyingi lakini vinavyotumiwa sana kufungasha vyakula vilivyosindikwa ni kama vifuatavyo:

3. ·         Vyombo vya aluminium
4. ·         Makopo na galoni za bati
5. ·         Mifuko ya karatasi na plastic

Miundo mbalimbali ya vyombo hivi inakidhi mahitaji mbalimbali kutegemea sifa za chakula na matakwa ya soko.

Kadhalika mifuko ya ‘plastic’, karatasi, ‘aluminium’ n.k. kutumiwa kufungasha vyakula mbalimbali kama vile vya maji na unga.

Makasha na maboksi ya uwezo mbalimbali yananunuliwa kufungasha bidhaa kwa soko la reja na jumla.

FASO EMPOWERING CHILDREN FROM FARMING FAMILY THROUGH ICT

THROUGH EMPOWERMENT OF FARMERS LIVES, FASO STARTED AN INITIATIVES OF TRAINING CHILDREN FROM FARMING FAMILY. BY SUPPORT FROM GERMANY ORGANIZATION CALLED LABDOO WHO PROVIDED USED LAPTOPS AND WORLD UNITE ORGANIZATION WHO BRING SUPPORTIVE VOLUNTEERS FROM DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, FASO TRAINING CHILDREN ON BASIC USES OF COMPUTER LIKE LATTER WRITING, DATA STORING ETC.
